Delegating more

Why it’s time to delegate more to your team

12 July 2022

Your role as a manager – no matter what area it’s in – is fairly all-encompassing. You’ll know better than anyone all of the tasks and responsibilities you have to juggle. And letting go of that can be a huge ask. When you’re in control of everything that needs taking care of, you also get to control the outcome.

But as a manager, delegation is part of the job. There comes a time where you have to trust the people below you. The likelihood is you are why those people are working with you, so there must be a reason you hired them. We’re here to tell you today that it’s time to let go and start delegating more. And here’s why…

You don’t have enough time in the day

No matter how hard you try, you can’t change the fact that there are only 24 hours in the day. Between developing strategies, visiting venues, and fixing issues, you don’t also have time to micromanage everything that’s going on under you. But by delegating certain tasks, you free yourself up for more managerial responsibilities.

More than that, it stops you from burning out. If you have too much on your plate, you can’t commit your full self to your role. For the sake of your job and your company, you can only work at your best when you’re free of unnecessary burdens. So those daily checks that need doing, trust someone on your team to handle that while you work on your strategy for the next 6 months.

Your team deserves a chance to grow…

Another reason to delegate is that it gives your team a chance to learn new skills and develop in their role. It’s something 82% of employees want as it equips them for the current working world. By building up their capabilities, it makes you a stronger team. You don’t want just one person to have all of the knowledge. When you spread it out, you enrich everyone’s abilities and make yourself more resilient to someone leaving.

This can also promote learning new soft skills. By giving your employees new responsibilities, you put them in positions where they’ll have to think outside the box and use their initiative. It also allows you to focus on managing them, as is your role.

…And so do you

Allowing your team to learn also gives you the space to learn too. It’s a great opportunity to put your managerial skills to the test. Instead of handling work yourself, you can focus on building them up, answering questions, and strengthening your capabilities.

That, in turn, makes you a stronger manager, which benefits you and your organisation. By showing this trust in your team, you can boost morale, efficiency, and productivity.

You can improve your communication

Another benefit to delegation is it promotes communication. Instead of everyone doing their own thing, you have to collaborate and share ideas. This is both communication within your team and your team with you. Make sure people know you’re open to questions at any time and build a healthy back and forth with your staff.

What’s going to be important is how you communicate. You’ll need full clarity to ensure there’s no miscommunication. If you’re delegating specific roles to people, it needs to be clear who does what. And if you’re trusting them to get on with work without micromanagement, you need live reporting to show you that goals are on track.

Once you standardise your approach to communication, you can check on operations from a distance, trust your team, and still have your finger on the pulse. It lets you breathe easy and lets them feel independent. But to do that, you need a capable platform.
