Why being consistent is so important for your multi-site organisation

6 September 2022

Consistency is one of the most vital qualities a business can strive for. It helps establish trust and loyalty with customers. It improves productivity and efficiency across your staff. And, ultimately, it allows your business to keep growing.

But being consistent is especially important if your organisation has multiple locations. You want to offer a seamless, high-quality customer experience, no matter what site a customer visits. That’s how you’ll leave them with a positive impression and increased chances of repeat business and referrals. After all, 73% of consumers say their love of a brand comes from helpful customer service.

Greater consistency in your systems and processes also allows all staff to operate like a well-oiled machine. No matter where they are in the world. You can remove friction from daily operations and minimise your chances of miscommunication and errors. It all sounds great on paper. But how do you actually get there?

Create a strong brand image

Establishing a strong brand image means getting super clear on your brand values and mission. What does your brand stand for? What’s your “why?” What are your long-term goals and mission? What problems do you solve for customers? What five words would you want customers to use to describe the business?

These are just a few examples of questions that will help you drill down into what makes your business tick. Your code of conduct, if you will. And from here, you want to communicate your answers to staff across all levels and locations of your business.

Revisiting your values and mission regularly will get everyone onto the same page, pushing towards the same goals. It ensures every decision you make – whether it’s Sarah in HR or Phil in sales – will bring you one step closer to your overarching mission. And this level of alignment across your business will have knock-on effects for the service you offer customers.

Communication is everything

One of the biggest causes of inconsistency is poor communication. You can’t offer first-class customer service if your departments and locations aren’t communicating with one another. And you can’t expect consistency and dedication from your staff if you aren’t fully supporting them along the way.

Maintaining robust communication channels will help with consistency across all aspects of your business. It allows for the seamless handover of responsibility throughout the customer journey. Behind the scenes, it helps you manage staff absences and increase efficiency by better supporting your staff. As well as enabling you to continually develop and invest in your people. And this is still just scratching the surface.

Standardise as much as possible

You want to make being consistent as simple and straightforward for your staff as possible. And standardised processes will take a lot of the guesswork and uncertainty out of their daily responsibilities.

By establishing systems and processes that staff can follow and rely on, you keep work clear and simple. You free up your staff’s time to actually complete tasks, not wonder what they need to do next. With a full checklist of the individual tasks needed to stay compliant, there’s so much less room for error and wasted time.

While you won’t be able to standardise absolutely everything, the more tasks you can build robust systems for, the better. The frequently repeated, structured tasks – like audits and safety checks – are always a good place to start.

Consistency is key if you want to offer a seamless, high-quality experience for customers and staff alike. And multi-site organisations are even more logistically difficult to manage, making clear values, strong communication, and standardised processes even more important for your business.
