The impact of feedback across your organisation

12 January 2021

In our lives, there are an unlimited number of feedback loops at play. Our biology, interpersonal relationships, and daily decisions all follow the same path: action, feedback, and response. We live, we learn, and we grow.

And the business world is no different. Feedback is how we adapt our businesses and operations to better suit our environments and circumstances. Without feedback, how can we know what’s going right, what’s going wrong, or what could be improved moving forward?

Today, we’re going to explore some of the ways regular, consistent feedback can improve your organisation.

Internal communications

Regular, honest communication and constructive feedback are essential to keeping a business running smoothly. Across your workforce, consistent feedback keeps staff motivation and engagement levels high. You can recognise and respond to your employees’ views and desires. As well as encouraging improved performance from every member of the team.

Creating a culture of open, transparent communication encourages everyone to vocalise their thoughts and opinions freely. It’s something that should trickle from the top down and be instilled into the very core of your business and culture.

96% of employees want to hear feedback regularly and 43% of highly engaged employees receive feedback at least once a week. As people, we want to know we’ve done a good job or be told ways to improve next time. When approached in a healthy and positive manner, feedback – be it constructive criticism or praise – can be a hugely integral aspect of business development and growth.

Consistent learning and improvement

We spoke last year about minimising errors across your organisation. While you can’t prevent all errors from happening, you can put systems in place to catch problems quickly. Setting up and embracing feedback loops across your organisation helps you visualise all progress and mistakes. And the quicker you catch a mistake, the sooner you can fix it.

Taking any negative feedback loops – whether that’s internal staff grievances, customer complaints, or missed conversions – analysing them, and taking any lessons on board ensures your business is constantly learning and improving.

Try to view every negative piece of feedback you receive as an opportunity to refine your processes and improve your business.

Informed decision-making

At the end of the day, feedback is data. It’s information you can gather, analyse, and use to inform your decisions. The more data you have at your fingertips, the more informed decisions you can make and the less risk your organisation faces.

The more you know about what is and isn’t working, the more tactically you can approach business decisions and development. You can identify the areas that need your attention most and recognise where you may be wasting time or resources.

The alternative? Without considering all this feedback that’s readily available to you, you’re left running your business blind, with no rhyme or reason behind your decisions or strategies. Embracing feedback – both negative and positive – empowers your organisation to be its best and always strive to be better.
