Three top tips to drive continuous improvement in your staff

11 May 2021

Staff development should be at the top of every company’s agenda. If you want to grow as a business and secure revenue, you need to have a team that’s capable of pushing those boundaries. It’s up to you as a business owner or manager to ensure your staff are always improving.

It’s a journey that never stops. Even if they’ve been on a particular training course to improve their skills, development is a continuous journey. So how can you guarantee your staff are constantly growing and developing? Here are our three top tips.

Performance reviews

Performance reviews are a great way to feedback to staff about their performance and suggest how they could improve without micromanaging. Having performance reviews every six months gives staff enough time to implement the changes you suggest. Staff can also raise any concerns or issues in these reviews, ensuring everyone stays feeling valued and heard.

To ensure continuous improvement, you should set small, attainable goals. Small goals increase confidence and stop staff from feeling too overwhelmed, keeping them productive. They’re also more likely to boost productivity because success is addictive. Our brains release dopamine – a feel-good chemical – when we achieve our goals, making employees more motivated to achieve them.

It also helps to give people a clear, standardised progression track through a company. Step by step, they can follow how to work through the organisation, from a team member to a supervisor, for example. This is not just a boost for employees, but management too. If you track this progress, it makes it easier to find the people who are ready for internal promotion.

Keep communication clear and regular

In a similar vein, you want to have a constant back-and-forth with your team. Communication is the cornerstone of any productive workplace. Without clear and constant communication, it can all fall apart. How will people know what’s expected of them? How can they be sure they understood what you asked for? And how do they know they have a shift in the first place? A breakdown in communication can really take its toll on a working environment and your team.

And it’s not just you that needs to keep communication effective; staff need to effectively communicate with each other, too. In companies where staff are connected, productivity can increase by 20-25%. And companies with a highly engaged workforce are 22% more profitable. So encouraging teammates to communicate with one another clearly and effectively can work wonders for your organisation and them as individuals.

Maintain a strong relationship with your staff

Studies show that employees who have respectful relationships with their employees are more likely to be happy, loyal, and productive. And happy members of staff are 13% more productive. So maintaining good relationships with your staff is key.

How do you maintain a strong relationship? It’s easier said than done, but many companies choose to use team-building exercises and team days out. And socialising between team members was shown in one study to improve communication patterns by over 50%, so it’s definitely worth it.

Continuous improvement is essential for your organisation. But finding the rhythm that allows for this can be tricky. These three tips should help you create a system for your employees and keep them constantly pushing to be better at their jobs. And you don’t need to do it all alone…
